one-year-performance

This guy was introduced to me by my Time Studio instructor. I'm still not entirely sure if I like his work, but he certainly left an impression on me...

Hsieh immigrated illegally to the US in 1973 from Taiwan. In 1978 he created his first performance art piece, "One Year Performance," in which he locked himself in a self-constructed cage for a year with absolutely no talking, writing, reading, or listening to TV or radio. He went on to do five more pieces: '80-'81 he punched a time clock on the hour every hour, '81-'82 he never entered any kind of shelter except his sleeping bag, '83-'84 he tied himself to Linda Montano for a year, '85-'86 he had absolutely no contact with the art world, '86-'99 he created art but never showed it publically.

I'm not sure I personally consider this to be art, but it's a start!

street installations

I decided I should probably install the Stumble Button, since it makes the internet more fun and introduces me to lots of cool things. And, lo and behold, the first place it took me was this guy's site!

I faintly remember seeing his site back at home, a year or so ago, and he's still as interesting as ever. I haven't gotten around to exploring the rest of his site yet, but I feel like I should.

The reason I picked the above image is because it was in Baltimore. Am I too focused on where I came from? Or do I just like the familiar? I wish I could've seen his work. There is/was a lot in DC, but he even did some in Rio de Janero, Sweden, London, and a bunch in Barcelona. Very cool, very thought-provoking, very interesting and different.

This time, I went to a news article about this artist, who (at least with this series) takes statistics about product consumption in the US and creates works that reflect that number. The image above depicts "200,000 packs of cigarettes, equal to the number of Americans who die from cigarette smoking every six months." It's also the cover image of David Sedaris's new book, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, which is why it caught my eye.

This guy's work was a real eye-opener. It's absolutely horrifying how much Americans consume on a daily basis, even an hourly basis. I'm all tingly with the information. It's quite disturbing, and it really ups my environmental tendencies...

Seriously, Americans are disgusting.

I have no idea who this man is, except that he's british. All I know is, he uses pictures he took himself or found online, eliminates one figure and then draws the figure back in. Or, rather, he traces over the figure and replaces the original. There's a tutorial on his site. Really, he's just an ordinary guy with internet and photoshop, but still, I've never seen anything like this before. Simple, cheap, and kind of like cheating... Oh well.

I was looking around on ubu, since I have to find a film person from the 80s to today to do a project-type thing on, and I found this guy. He's originally from Russia and he made stop-motion films involving insects since he really loved them. And I was all set to use this guy when I remembered it had to be from the 80s onward, and he made his films in, like, 1912 and such...

Ah well.

I really want to try stop-motion, since we sort of skipped that inbetween phase... We went straight from photography to video. So, I shall just have to try harder!

He's pretty sweet. Does assemblage mainly, painting on found objects and doing weird stuff to them. Sort of at the beginning of pop art, but way cooler than pop art. Cuz pop art kinda sucks.

i carved it for my project class! yay! it's very smooth, but i kinda wish it was stained... but i was dumb and didn't finish sanding it while i was home in time to use some stain we have there, so it's just plain... still, i'm pretty proud of it! yay!

giant self portrait!!

so, here's what my life size self portrait will be. pencil drawing, super detailed, cuz i need to work on drawing what i actually see... i've been drawing myself so much i don't even look anymore, so my portraits don't really look like me anymore. anyway, pencil drawing with an embroidered background. it will be intense and crazy and hopefully awesome. the final size will be 29.75 x 66.5 in, meaning the figure will be a little under life size.

i'm starting the grid on the big paper, which will take a while to get... then i can actually start the drawing! the sqaures on it are 1.75 inches. i'm using 4 pieces of 22x30 paper, which i outlined rectangles on to make them more reasonable. 3 are 29.75 x 18 and the fourth is 29.75 x 12.5.

i really liked this one pic, when i was trying to get the whole figure so i can actually piece it all together. it almost looks like i'm naked or something.

These five pics are from a day or so ago, so my book has evolved since I took these. But it's all I have right now, and Cesley has my camera for the Rock the Vote concert, so I can't take more. Whatever, the images are from pages that are pretty much the same [except the one of the 3rd major, as I have now filled in what it is].

Unfortunately, the site I was using for my old work [see a previous post] is being shut down due to the investors and the economy... something like that. So, until I get around to making a deviantart page, I've uploaded all the work from there to photobucket! Cuz if I hadn't done that, those pieces would be lost in the interwebs forever. And I like those pieces. I don't want to have to take those slides all over again... That would suck.

SO, here's where the art is now! Soon [like, later this week, or even tomorrow] it'll be on deviantart. But until then, it's just on photobucket. How boring.

Big Print Project: Progress!

Yay! That's what I have for the Big Print contest thing. It's a different image than I had originally picked, but I like it much better. It's way more interesting...

The following 3 videos are short vids from when I was working on ideas for my 1-minute project. They're from a couple days ago when Jenny decided to cover my leg in duct tape. So, here I am taking the duct tape off...

And then there's the weird stuffed animals I'm using for my actual video. They'll be chasing Bayly around Monroe Park at night. They're currently unfinished, as I need to get Nicole to draw weird faces on them. But, here they are right now:

They're made of canvas (as it's the only fabric I have) and stuffed with tissues. Green ones.

I have to figure out how they'll actually be chasing Bayly... I was thinking putting sticks in them and having someone holding them and running after her...

No, I still don't have the images of my latest for this class, that being the shadow portraits or the 14 charcoal drawing sequence.

BUT, I do have a link to my past work! I remembered I got an account on uber.com a while ago and I started uploading some of my work there. It's mostly paintings from junior year, since I think I forgot about putting new stuff up, and there's only 3 photos, and though they are 3 of my better, they're all older stuff with none of my new, concept-y stuff. Ah well. I'll probably upload that stuff after I go home this weekend and I can get it from my home computer.

luvlettr is the name of the site, and that's just a link to the actual work. There's really not much else there except a music player and a description of what I thought my painting style was. The image at the top is easily of my favorite painting. It's called "Pulling," it's 20 x 26, and it's from my figure class in 11th grade. Also, there are naked people in the link... That's what figure was, naked people. Just so people are aware, I did warn you.

What a Day

So, today I turned in my 72 portraits. I don't have a final picture of it yet, but I will by the end of this week. I was all excited for a crit day, and then I remembered I love getting my work critiqued, but I'm not very good at talking about others' work. For every piece I tried to think of something to say, falling back on what I know about art not the execution. And I hate to say it, but some of the pieces turned in today were at about the level of incoming freshmen back at my high school. I feel so bad saying that, but I guess I really did turn into a snobby fartist...

Unfortunate things: We had to haul a ton of stuff to the class and only ended up using the newsprint pad and india ink. Very sucky. Then, we spent 45 minutes doing an assignment I'd already done back in 10th grade, and back then we spent about 15-20 minutes on those portraits! So I sat there for about half the time, hoping the instructor would come over and say something about the fact that I wasn't doing anything... but she never did. And for homework we have to do 2 self portraits in the same style as the class thing, but we're expected to spend a total of 6 hours on it! That's way too long for such a ridiculously easy assignment, so I'm setting myself up to take longer: I'm going to sew together pieces of canvas paper and do the portraits in oil paint. Hopefully that'll take close to 6 hours...

Yeah, she lost some teacher-points today...

I just needed to rant about that, even if this wasn't the most appropriate place to do so. I shall now go tell Shelley, as hopefully she'll feel my pain.

Also, as a side note, I feel like I should mention that this blog and the attached one [Hypnotized, my artist name blog] use words from a Millimeters Mercury song "Ace Aviatrix". Their website and the song itself.

Tied Together

So, the following pictures are from a Time Studio assignment, which was a kind of performance art thing where we paired up and spend 3 hours tied together at the waist. I was tied to Briana, and we started with our art history class [there are no images from that, as I didn't want to get in trouble for that...], then spent almost 2 hours walking around campus.

This a possible-homeless guy, who we named Joe. He asked us why we were tied together and agreed to be in a picture if we paid him a dollar, cuz he was trying to get another box of cigarettes. At least he was honest about what the money would be for...We went to the Student Commons, looking for people who would ask us abut the rope. We got a girl from a sorority to take this pic.

This is how it's going now with the 72 self-portraits. I've got one done, and the grid thing for the other 71. I'm very pleased with how it's turning out so far! I'm actually kinda excited for how this will all turn out. Not bad for the first serious drawing I've done in about a year and a half...

Busy Saturday

I had meant to work on my 72 self-portraits yesterday, as I only had FI and that was over around noon. But, seeings as I forgot my meds, I got super distracted by this lovely laptop and failed to get any real work done. I did get completely fed up with trying to find a cool template for this that would actually work...

So today, after Ces's parents leave, I really will get started on those. Because if I don't at least start them soon, I'll never get them done and I'll never get around to that 3-4 page diagnostic essay I have to write for FI. So! This WILL be a success and I WILL at least get the larger of the 72 portraits done and lay out the grid for the rest of them. Or else I will shoot myself.... or something like that...
